Codex CLI and desktop

Updated 2026-10-28

Current status: direct Codex access is not yet available. AI526 implements Chat Completions but does not currently expose /v1/responses. Current Codex configuration requires wire_api = "responses"; changing a base URL cannot bridge that protocol gap.

Configuration reference

This template is for use after Responses support and model compatibility are implemented and verified. Do not run it against AI526 yet. Once supported, replace the model placeholder with a confirmed compatible public ID from the catalog.

model = "REPLACE_WITH_PUBLIC_MODEL_ID"
model_provider = "ai526"
web_search = "disabled"

[model_providers.ai526]
name = "AI526"
base_url = "https://api.ai526.com/v1"
wire_api = "responses"
env_key = "AI526_API_KEY"
requires_openai_auth = false

Merge into user-level ~/.codex/config.toml or %USERPROFILE%\.codex\config.toml on Windows. Avoid duplicate keys or tables. Keep the first three settings before any table header. Project-local configuration cannot override provider settings.

Supply the key through the client process environment. PowerShell session example:

$env:AI526_API_KEY = 'YOUR_AI526_API_KEY'
codex

macOS / Linux terminal:

export AI526_API_KEY='YOUR_AI526_API_KEY'
codex

Desktop scope

The official guide confirms that macOS and Windows desktop apps read these user-level files. Restart after changes and ensure the app process receives the key. A variable set in a terminal may not reach an app launched from a desktop icon. Verify CLI and desktop separately.

AI526's standard /v1/models list is not a Codex-native catalog. Custom aliases may require version-matched model metadata. Do not set model_catalog_url until a compatible catalog is provided and validated.

Verification after implementation

Validate Responses, streaming, tool calls and follow-up turns first. Use /status in the CLI, inspect model settings in the app, and confirm requests in AI526 history.

This page does not modify your computer's Codex settings.
